We Need Your Help!

Mapping Prejudice has utilized optical character recognition (ORC) to identity over 30,000 property deeds containing racial language in Hennepin County. In order to reach our goal of mapping every racial covenant in Minneapolis, we need help transcribing these deed images.

To do this, we are leveraging Zooniverse. This digital platform enables community and volunteer based research by hosting content that can then be crowd-sourced. For Mapping Prejudice, this means hosting all deeds that OCR has identified as containing racial language. When you sign in to our Zooniverse project page, you can start transcribing these flagged images. For each image, you will be asked a series of questions. Each deed takes no more than a few minutes. The information that you enter will then be exported and used to finish our map of racial restrictions. With enough volunteer help, we hope to have mapped all of the racial covenants in Minneapolis by the end of the year.

As a volunteer, you will have the opportunity to read critical historical records, document how private contracts undergirded structural racism in Minneapolis, and contribute to a community resource that can fuel future conversations about racial disparities and housing policies.

Getting involved is easy:

1. Go to Zooniverse.org and set up an account.

2. Attend one of our weekly training sessions.
